The Acropolis

The Acropolis

Athens and the Ancient Greeks

Athens has been variously described as the birthplace of democracy, Western civilisation and the Olympics. It was one of the most important and powerful cities in Greece during the Classical period, during which time it was a great centre for art, literature and philosophy, as well as being the first of the Greek city states to develop democracy. Today's visitors marvel at the rich abundance of temples dating from antiquity that are spread casually amongst the vibrant and lively modern city.
