Old Town, Dubrovnik
A visit to Dubrovnik, UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of Croatia, is a visit to the historical outskirts of Christendom, often described as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean'. The country's culture and traditions have been forged over 2,000 tumultuous years, witnessing the Crusades, Ottoman Empire, Iron Curtain and the Balkan conflicts. Our tour includes Dubrovnik Old City, the town of Ston with its medieval fort and salt works, and the island of Korcula, home to one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean, before finishing in the wine growing Peljesac Peninsula.
Dubrovnik Old Town • Ston and Oyster Tasting • Korcula Old Town • Peljesac Peninsula
Day 1 Fly to Dubrovnik and transfer to the hotel before enjoying a guided tour of the Old City, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Highlights include the Franciscan Monastery with Europe's oldest pharmacy, the cathedral with its famous treasury and the Rector's Palace, once the seat of the government for the Dubrovnik Republic.
Day 2 Full day tour to Ston, a military fort town of the Ragusan Republic with defensive walls that are a feat of medieval architecture. There is an 890 metre long town wall and 5 kilometre Great Wall outside the town, making it the second longest in the world. Ston is also well known for its saltworks which were highly coveted by both the Republic of Dubrovnik and the Ottoman Empire. After the city tour there is an opportunity to participate in oyster tasting in a local restaurant.
Day 3 Travel by ferry to the island of Korcula, peopled traditionally by stonemasons, shipbuilders and seafarers whose beautiful churches and magnificent palaces were largely influenced by the Venetian Renaissance. We include a guided tour of Korcula Old Town, one of the best preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean.
Day 4 A free day to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
Day 5 After breakfast, travel to the Peljesac Peninsula. The area is known for its vineyards and some may wish to sample local foods and enjoy wine-tasting before transferring to the airport for the homeward flight.
