Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore
Italian Lakeland Trio, Sordevolo and Turin
The Italian region of Piedmont lies in the foothills of the Alps. It is famous not only for its wonderful landscape but also its fine wines, cuisine and culture. Nestled in the heart of the region is the hidden gem of Lake Viverone. It is well placed for visits to Lakes Orta and Maggiore as well as Turin, Italy's first capital. This voyage of discovery includes all of these highlights in addition to an evening visit to Sordevolo for dinner and a performance of their historic Passion Play, a cultural experience that takes place in the village's magnificent open air theatre.

Sordevolo Passion Play
The tradition started around 1490 when the play was performed on Good Friday in Rome's Colosseum. The text's journey to Sordevolo is shrouded in mystery and since 1816 the community have continued the performance tradition. It's arguably Italy's most significant amateur theatrical event and it generates cultural, religious and secular interest.
The stage is some 4,000 square metres and includes impressive sets with a reconstructed corner of Jerusalem, Herod's Palace, Garden of Gethsemane and Calvary. The performance takes place in the evening and is approximately 3 hours with some 400 actors. The stage is open air and the seating is ascending in a covered auditorium. All seats offer a good view of the stage.
