Jerash

Jordan

The modern Kingdom of Jordan has an ancient culture stretching back thousands of years. Through the centuries Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Crusaders and Ottoman Turks have all left their mark. Jordan has a surprising array of landscapes, ranging from the red deserts of the south to the eastern volcanic plains, olive strewn hills in the north and the Dead Sea in the west. Herds of gazelle and oryx can be seen in the national parks and the migrating birdlife can be exceptional.

Jerash • Byzantine mosaics • Holy Land • Rose Red City • Wadi Rum • Dead Sea

Day 1 Fly to Amman where you will transfer to your hotel.

Day 2 Morning guided tour of Amman, including the Citadel, Archaeological and Folkloric Museums and the King Abdullah Mosque. Visit Jerash, one of the best preserved and complete Greco-Roman cities.

Day 3 Depart south to Madaba, home of the 6th century Byzantine mosaics which are the oldest surviving maps of the Holy Land. Continue to Mt Nebo, where Moses proclaimed Israel the "Promised Land", then to the Crusader Castle of Kerak dating from the 12th century.

Day 4 Enjoy a guided tour of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known as "The Rose Red City". Built over 3,000 years ago by the Nabataeans as their capital city, Petra's tombs, palaces, temples and treasury, hewn from desert rock, make an unforgettable impression.

Day 5 Depart for the Wadi Rum nature reserve and explore the desert in 4 wheel drive jeeps with local Bedouin guides. Look out for wildlife and ancient rock carvings. The valley was the film location of the Oscar winning Lawrence of Arabia. In the afternoon continue to the Dead Sea and the hotel.

Day 6 Today is free to relax on the shores of the Dead Sea. At 400 metres below sea level, it is the lowest point on earth. The salinity is 8.6 times that of normal seawater, making it too salty for any life to survive: hence its name. However, its health giving properties have attracted visitors from around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years.

Day 7 After breakfast, transfer to Amman Airport for a flight to the UK.
