Wieliczka Salt Mine
Krakow was, for many years, the capital of Poland and seat of Royal power. Overlooking the river is the impressive 11th century Wawel Castle, where Polish Kings were both crowned and buried. Krakow and nearby Auschwitz were tragic participants in WWII. Despite its long and often chequered history, this beautiful city has largely survived the ravages of time unscathed and today is listed by UNESCO as one of the world's most significant historic sites.
Wonderful Krakow guided tours • Auschwitz • WWII Poland • Wieliczka Salt Mine
Day 1 Fly to Krakow where you will be met by an English speaking guide and transferred to your hotel for dinner.
Day 2 This morning there is a guided walking tour of the Old Town Square area of Krakow. Highlights include St Mary's Church, the Sukiennice (cloth hall) and the Old Market Square itself (Rynek Glowny), the largest medieval square in Poland.
Day 3 Your second guided walking tour takes you to Wawel Castle and the cathedral with their impressive collections of art that includes Italian and Dutch paintings of the 14th -17th centuries. Afternoon free followed by dinner at the hotel.
Day 4 This morning's tour is of the Jewish Quarter in Krakow, from which most of the residents were either killed or deported to nearby Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Kazimierz was the setting for Stephen Spielberg's film "Schindler's List". The afternoon is free, though there is an optional excursion to Auschwitz. In the evening you transfer by coach back to Kazimierz, to a Jewish restaurant for dinner.
Day 5 On your final morning in Krakow, you visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine, the oldest salt mine in Europe, and a UNESCO World heritage site. The mine was once one of the world's biggest and most profitable enterprises, in the days when salt was as commercially important as oil is today. The miners created an underground world out of the rock salt, including underground churches, statues and even chandeliers. In the afternoon you transfer to Krakow airport for your flight back the UK.
