International Bomber Command Centre
Lincolnshire... 'Bomber County'
Lincolnshire is often considered the spiritual home of military aviation in the UK, playing a vital role in WWI and WWII. Local airfields were bases for the famous wartime squadrons and now offer visitors the chance to relive those memories. In addition to visiting one such centre, this tour now features the new International Bomber Command Centre, opening in Autumn 2017. This rich heritage coupled with the beauty of the Lincolnshire Wolds and coastline make for an unforgettable experience.
Lincolnshire Wolds and Coastline • Battle of Britain Visitor Centre • NEW IBCC
Day 1 Travel to the hotel in Lincolnshire.
Day 2 Morning visit to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre at RAF Coningsby, for a guided tour. Later attend the Down Memory Lane cinema show. Relive cinema as it was in its heyday with vintage clips, classic adverts and sing-a-long films. Down Memory Lane cinema show is not available on weekends or school holidays. Alternative excursions can be discussed on this day.
Day 3 Make your way this morning, to what will be the highlight of the tour for many: a visit to the new International Bomber Command Centre, located on the outskirts of Lincoln and set within 10 acres of landscaped 'Peace Gardens'. Following a warm welcome, immerse yourself in the interactive exhibition which tells the stories of those who served, supported and suffered during the bombing campaigns of World War II. See the Walls of Names, Ribbon of Remembrance and the Spire Memorial, the UK's tallest war memorial and once the sighting point for crews based in the area. A guide will accompany this visit.
Day 4 A day to explore Lincolnshire's pretty coastline. Places such as Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes are classic holiday destinations but this area is also famed for its nature and birdlife.
Day 5 Homeward journey.
The aviation theme can be extended by visiting the
Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre, RAF Digby or by including
a Dam Busters Presentation at the famous Petwood Hotel.
