Day 1 Fly from the UK to Madrid and transfer to the hotel in Burgo de Osma
Day 2 Travel to Peñafiel for a full day's excursion including an audio guided tour of the castle; admission to the wine museum and a guided tour of the cutting edge Protos winery designed by the British architect Richard Rogers. Continue to the Plaza del Coso a medieval square created to accommodate bullfighting festivals, for which it is still sometimes used today.
Day 3 A morning guided walking tour of El Burgo de Osma, which has one of the best preserved medieval precincts in the entire province centred on the Gothic cathedral. Continue to Navaleno for an included lunch at the Michelin starred La Lobita Restaurant. Today's final stop is the provincial capital, Soria, for a guided tapas tour.
Day 4 A day to relax and soak in the surroundings. Maybe enjoy the spa facilities or people watch over a café solo in the medieval town.
Day 5 Transfer to Ávila for a guided tour of the town with its impressive cathedral, intact medieval city walls, with 80-plus crenelated, semi-circular towers and 9 gates, including the arched El Alcázar. Although it's just a short distance from Madrid, this is an isolated spot, perched above the surrounding plain, where all the streets seem to disappear into the sky and modern Spain is a distant memory.
Day 6 Travel to Salamanca for a guided tour which includes the old and new cathedrals and the pre-renaissance Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells). Famous for its 13th century university, Salamanca is a UNESCO listed city with intricately decorated golden sandstone churches, palaces and squares which come alive in the sunlight above the river. After dark, they are illuminated and the city bubbles with Spanish life.
Day 7 Visit to Segovia with its famous Roman aqueduct, medieval walls, splendid mansions, former royal palace and Gothic cathedral. Before the 16th century, Segovia was one of the most important cities in Spain, as evidenced by the Romanesque churches throughout the old town.
Day 8 Travel to Cáceres for a guided tour. Cáceres was declared a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1986 because of the city's blend of Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance styles, the result of many civilizations throughout history. An amazing 30 towers from the Muslim period still stand in Cáceres. The city of Cáceres has been declared Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2015.
Day 9 A full day excursion to Mérida. Once capital of Lusitania (Spain and Portugal), Mérida was founded in 25 BC. It boasts some of the finest Roman ruins in the whole of Spain and possibly the world and highlights include the theatre where open air festivals are held, especially in the summer, the amphitheatre, the Temple of Diana and the Roman Bridge. It is nowadays the administrative capital of the region of Extremadura and was awarded the title of World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Day 10 Transfer to the airport in Madrid for the flight back to the UK.
