Northern Lights in Iceland

Our tour heads to the countryside in west and south-east Iceland in order to maximize the chances of seeing the elusive Northern Lights. We visit the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Information Centre, a traditional shark farmer, bathe in geothermal pools, see waterfalls, lava fields, geysers and glaciers. Where else can you stand with your feet either side of two tectonic plates that form the Mid-Atlantic Ridge? The tour includes six evenings of presentations, lectures and guided tours at spots likely to offer a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.

Day 1 Fly to Reykjavik airport and transfer to your hotel in Reykjavik.

Day 2 Morning guided city tour of Reykjavik before heading west to Borgarfjörður valley, known as the Saga valley of West Iceland because many important historical events took place there. Continue to Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring and then on to your hotel for the next two nights at Reyholt in West Iceland.

Day 3 Full day excursion to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, "Peninsula of the Snowy Mountain", which juts out from Iceland's west coast. Visit the fishing town of Stykkishólmur for a lunch cruise in the Breiðafjörður fjord and then at Bjarnarhöfn, stop to taste Hákarl, fermented shark. At Borgarnes, visit the Icelandic Settlement Centre.

Day 4 Head east along the shores of Hvalfjörður fjord and turn inland to Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Gullfoss Waterfalls and the Geyser Geothermal Fields. Here you will see the Strokkur Geyser which erupts at 5-10 minute intervals while you taste freshly baked hot spring bread, geothermally boiled eggs, and herring, served with a small glass of ice cold Schnapps. Overnight in south Iceland.

Day 5 Travel along the south coast, seeing the Seljalandsfoss waterfall which plunges over the mountain. Stop at the Eyjafjallajökull Information Center to learn about living next to a glacier and active volcano. Visit one of Iceland's finest folk museums and make your way to Vatnajökull National Park, next to Europe's largest glacier. Two nights accommodation in the Vatnajökull Region.

Day 6 Spend the day close to the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon filled with floating icebergs. You can walk on the black sandy beach where large icebergs get stranded and you will have the afternoon at the park, which has Iceland's highest mountain, and Europe's largest glacier.

Day 7 As you head back west, you'll stop at Kirkjubæjarklaustur to see basalt columns, similar to the Giant's Causeway in Ireland. Visit coastal villages with old wooden houses and fascinating coastal scenery before returning to Reykjavik and an evening soak in the famous Blue Lagoon.

Day 8 Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
