Venice

19th century Romantics said that Venice was heading for genteel decay, but how wrong they were. This city of stone and marble, built upon wooden posts driven into the mud banks, continues to defy the laws of physics and the imagination. In a car free environment of 150 canals and over 400 bridges, visitors can watch the sun quietly set over the same scenes that Monet famously painted. Take a gondola ride and bask in the glory of the Grand Canal palaces. Stroll through the cobbled streets, enjoying glimpses of artisans and tradesmen at work, or through churches and palaces adorned with work of the grand masters.

Historic Venice • Canals • Bridge of Sighs • Doge's Palace • St Mark's Square

Day 1 Fly from the UK to Venice. Transfer on arrival by motor launch to the hotel. Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant.

Day 2 Transfer from your hotel to St. Mark's Square by motor launch. Enjoy a half day guided walking tour. Visit first St Mark's Basilica, one the most spectacular houses of worship in the world, adorned with an array of treasures. Continue to the Doge's Palace which was for centuries the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme power in the City Republic of Venice. The palace is connected to the New Prison by an ornately carved bridge of white limestone called the Bridge of Sighs, so named by Lord Byron who imagined the wistful sigh of prisoners taking their last view of beautiful Venice before incarceration. This afternoon is free to explore the city. Dinner tonight will be at a local restaurant.

Day 3 After breakfast lies a day at leisure. Perhaps walk to St Mark's Square and hire a gondola, one of the traditional, flat-bottomed Venetian rowing boats (not included).

Day 4 After breakfast there is some free time before returning to the airport for a flight back to the UK.
