Bath and Bristol

Very much 'the place to be', Bristol offers a fascinating opportunity to experience its prosperous maritime history. The former port is now a cultural hub where 19th-century warehouses have been transformed. By contrast, Bath recalls the elegance of the Georgian age and the enduring legacy of the Roman occupation of Britain.

Castle Combe • SS Great Britain • Bradford on Avon • Royal Crescent

Day 1 Travel to the hotel in Cheltenham.

Day 2 Begin the day with a visit to Castle Combe, hailed as the 'prettiest village in England', where many of the houses are hundreds of years old and built using traditional methods. Continue to the city of Bristol. Bristol's Harbourside and shopping areas offer visitors a variety of attractions and retail experiences. We have included a visit to Brunel's SS Great Britain, once the longest passenger ship in the world. The M Shed, a museum telling the story of this fascinating city or a cruise on the Avon are also options.

Day 3 Travel to Bradford on Avon, a rare combination of river, canal and architecture of true character where the Romans, Saxons, Normans, Georgians and Victorians have all left their mark. We continue to the medieval city of Wells visiting the Cathedral, Bishop's Palace and Gardens.

Day 4 First stop is the picturesque National Trust village of Lacock. The village dates from the 13th century and, with its historic lime washed and half timbered buildings, it remains largely untouched by modern development. In recent years it has been a film set for productions such as the Harry Potter films and the BBC's Cranford. Continue to the Georgian City of Bath for some free time in this beautiful city. We recommend visits to the famous Royal Crescent, the Jane Austen Centre and the Roman Baths before exploring the lanes of specialist shops.

Day 5 Homeward journey.
