Tales and Trails

South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire are lesser-known destinations that will keep you amused for many an hour. Blessed with wonderful scenery, cities steeped in industrial heritage, steam railways, renowned authors and impressive stately homes.

Brodsworth Hall & Gardens • Elsecar • Bronte • Keighley & Worth Railway • Kelham Island

Day 1 Travel to your hotel in South Yorkshire.

Day 2 Today, visit Brodsworth Hall and Gardens to hear of its impressive rise as a country seat and steady decline until it was saved in the 1990s. Inside, the interiors were conserved as close to possible as they were found, preserving its distinctive character. On return, visit much loved Elsecar, a heritage centre village built by the gentry which became an international centre of ironmaking and coalmining. It is now home to a number of independent shops and cafes.

Day 3 Off to Bronte country and Haworth where a Bronte themed guided tour awaits. From here, it’s a short hop to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. First opened in 1867 to transport coal and textiles to the local mills, journey back in time and enjoy five miles of stunning scenery. To round the day off, head to the Victorian spa town of Ilkley, known for its breath-taking moorland scenery, with time to wander at your own pace.

Day 4 To Sheffield and Kelham Island Museum. Delve into the story of manufacture, from master craftsmen to mass production. Experience life and work during the Industrial Revolution, the Victorian era, celebrate the Women of Steel and see how industry forged this cosmopolitan city. In contrast, then take a scenic drive to the Peak District National Park and the village of Castleton at the head of the Hope Valley. Take time to stroll or perhaps treat yourself to some ‘Blue John’, a semi-precious mineral, unique to this area of Derbyshire.

Day 5 Homeward journey.
