Welsh Treasures and the Royal Mint

Based just outside the capital city, this tour captures the essence of Welsh culture and spectacular scenery, in addition to including a visit to one of the most interesting new attractions in many years: The Royal Mint Visitor Centre which produces coins and medals for over 60 countries worldwide. Tours are based on Monday departures.

Caerphilly Castle • Royal Mint • Big Pit Mining Museum • Penderyn Visitor Centre

Day 1 Travel to the hotel in Cardiff.

Day 2 First stop is Caerphilly, for a visit to the largest castle in Wales. Explore this 13th century sleeping giant before time at leisure in the town, famous for its cheese. Proceed deeper into the Welsh Valleys to the fascinating and highly entertaining Llancaiach Fawr Manor House. If you are lucky you may meet the Master of the House Edward Prichard but if not, the 'servants' of this Tudor Manor House are always on hand to show you around.

Day 3 Today begins with admission to the Royal Mint Visitor Centre, for an escorted tour of the production process. From here, enjoy an engaging, self-guided tour of static and interactive exhibits, bringing to life the Mint's heritage. This afternoon, we include an introductory tour in the attractive city centre of Cardiff, as well as the modernised Cardiff Bay with its fascinating public buildings, including the Welsh Assembly.

Day 4 An excursion to the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park and a morning visit to Big Pit Mining Museum to learn about the region's heritage. As well as an underground tour of the mine, there is a virtual tour above ground, providing a moving and entertaining illustration of the lives of miners at work and home. This afternoon visit Penderyn Visitor Centre to learn about whisky making in Wales and general Welsh history in the exhibition centre.

Day 5 Homeward journey.
