Lake District

Where England’s most dramatic and wild landscapes meet tranquil lakes and idyllic villages. We follow in the footsteps of William Wordsworth as we explore this stunning part of Cumbria. Wordsworth was inspired by the beauty and grandeur of this National Park and you can witness the same spectacular sights on our tour, which includes two lake cruises and a railway journey. Our tour will take us on a journey that inspired not only William Wordsworth but also the works of Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome and saw heroism and tragedy in the search for speed on Coniston Water.

Best Western Premier Castle Green Hotel, Kendal

This 4 star hotel is well located on the eastern edge of the town, in a semi rural setting. It is a large 100 room hotel set back from the road in it's own grounds which include a separate pub, Alexanders. The hotel has a very smart open plan lounge, bar and restaurant, with views over the countryside. A leisure centre completes the excellent facilities. There is a lift in the original building, which contains 60 rooms, but those in the newer extensions are not lift accessible. The hotel does have a good number of ground floor rooms. Many rooms have bath and shower, but some have shower only. On site coach parking is available in two dedicated bays.

Meal arrangements include a full English breakfast. Dinner menu and vegetable choice will change daily and will be taken in the main restaurant, unless room size dictates this is not possible. The menu will consist of a choice of a minimum three starters, three main courses (to include one vegetarian option) and three desserts using locally sourced produce if possible. Table service will be available for drinks throughout the meal. Jugs of iced tap water, bread roll and butter and tea & coffee will be provided with dinner.

Sunday 15 May We leave Crowborough (outside Waitrose) this morning and with appropriate rest stops and a lunch stop at Shugborough Estate, travel to our hotel. We will receive a personal welcome on arrival which will include an introduction to the hotel to include items such as dining times and guidance on whom to contact for assistance during our stay. Rooms and keys will be ready and made available, with a complimentary tea & coffee station during welcome and check-in. Next we have time to unpack, change and have a drink before sitting down for dinner.

Monday 16 May After breakfast, our coach takes us almost due north to the area’s second largest lake, Ullswater. We board a boat at Pooley Bridge and cruise south west to Glenridding along the lake. Ullswater 'Steamers' is an award winning environmentally accredited Lake District attraction celebrating 160 years of operating cruises on England's most beautiful lake. Operating one of the largest heritage vessel fleets in the world, offering us an unforgettable experience. Then it’s back on the coach to Ambleside where we stop for lunch, before travelling to Rydal Mount where William Wordsworth spent the greater part of his life from 1813 to 1850. The house, which was a focus for romantic literature, continues to be owned by the Wordsworth family and retains the feel of a lived in family home. We then return to the hotel for dinner.

Tuesday 17 May After leaving the hotel, our first coach stop is at Haverthwaite where we board a steam train to take us on a three-and –a-half mile journey to the south end of Lake Windermere at Lakeside. We then switch transport to cruise north up the lake all the way to Bowness, home to the delightful world of beloved author Beatrix Potter.  Here, we enjoy some time at leisure for lunch before visiting The World of Beatrix Potter attraction where the sights and sounds of her much loved characters are magically brought to life.  Then it’s back to the hotel for dinner.

Wednesday 18 May Today we have a day at leisure. Either stay and relax at the hotel, enjoying perhaps its pool and the garden, or taking a taxi into nearby Kendal, wander around its shopping centre, stop for some Kendal cake, or visit Kendal’s Abbot Hall Art Gallery housing a great collection of 18th and 19th century fine art.  Alternatively, you could visit the Kendal Museum, or go three miles south to Sizergh Castle. We return to the hotel though in time for dinner. Return taxis from the hotel to the centre of Kendal are included today but no other transport or admissions are included.

Thursday 19 May Today we travel to Grasmere and the central Lake District area. We see Grasmere Lake and Rydal Water and go past Dove Cottage (home of Wordsworth, currently closed for refurbishment). We stop to walk round the Wordsworth Daffodil Garden where Wordsworth was buried and also stroll a few yards down to the Gingerbread shop. We then reboard our coach and travel past Coniston Water where Donald Campbell raced and author Arthur Ransome learnt to sail.  Continuing south we travel to Holker Hall, Cumbria’s answer to Downton Abbey, where we will have lunch (not included) and visit their lovely house and gardens.  Then it’s back on the coach to return to our hotel for dinner.

Friday 20 May Today we enjoy a lovely scenic drive going north-west past Lake Windermere, Thirlemere Reservoir, Derwentwater, and onto Bassenthwaite Lake.  We then visit Keswick, sometimes labelled the handsomest of all the Lake District Towns, and enjoy lunch and time at leisure. Time may permit a visit to the Derwent Pencil Museum (admission not included) with wartime spy pencils that were hollowed out for secret maps, as well as a visit to the Castlerigg Stone Circle (English Heritage) parking is limited and walking from the centre of Keswick takes about thirty minutes. Then we travel through more of the Lake District’s scenic routes back to our hotel for our final dinner.

Saturday 21 May After breakfast we check out of the hotel, board the coach and make our way home to Crowborough with comfort stops as required.
